Romantic Vacation Spots In France

The pretty lakeside town of Annecy, capital of Haute-Savoie, is one of our favourite romantic destinations in France.

In fact, Annecy Lake (Lac d'Annecy) is brimming with charming medieval towns, wonderful hotels, delicious food and beautiful alpine scenery - a perfect setting for a romantic break.

It's a lovely place to visit any time of year, and is a great choice for a Valentines Day or February getaway with your special someone.

Annecy is easy to get to - only about an hour's drive from Geneva airport or a three hour train ride from Paris on the TGV.

With a well-preserved medieval centre, castle, and magical alpine setting, Annecy is one of the best romantic vacation spots around. In fact, the town has been nicknamed "French Venice" because of its ancient canals, arched alleyways and bridges.

Other places worth exploring in the area include Talloires, a medieval village with old stone houses, archways and an abbey, and Menthon-St.-Bernard which has a fairtale turreted castle.

You have a few choices here for romantic hotels, depending on what you want - luxurious or something more moderately priced.

Top of the list is L'Auberge du Père Bise, a four-star luxury hotel on the Lac d'Annecy in the peaceful medieval town of Talloires (a few miles southeast of Annecy). Try and book a room overlooking the lake; and if you'd like to eat at the Michelin restaurant, you'll need to book well in advance (at least a couple of months is recommended).
